July - August 2019 Voter

This issue of The Voter is full of information about League and its activities.  Summer isn't just vacation time for League members.  It includes

  • Invitations to volunteer on several committees of League, including Centennial celebration, the census, CMAL, action/advocacy, and as election judges
  • Upcoming programs : Brews and Book Reviews in July, ERA Legislation in August, and Better Angels in September.
  • An article by Judy Stuthman about how League became the only organization authorized to register new citizens to vote at naturalization ceremonies in Minnesota
  • Encouragement from Florence Sprague to dig more deeply into why others hold the views they do if they don't agree with your own

Legalizing Equality - Is the ERA Still Needed? August 20

The Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed in 1923 by suffragist Alice Paul and was finally approved by the House of Representatives in 1971 and the Senate the following year.  It needed ratification by 38 state legislatures, but by the deadline in 1982 only 35 had.  Since then two more states have ratified it.  ERA Minnesota is part of a movement to extend the deadline and convince one more state to back the amendment.

Rosefest Parade Monday, June 24

Come show your support for our League and have a good time!  Newer members - come have fun and meet other League members.  We will be marching in the Rosefest Paradeand would like everyone to join us.  Some people will be dressing as suffragettes to remind everyone of the struggle 100 years ago to get voting rights for women.  Others will wear t-shirts saying “vote” and LWV caps.  Caps are available through Sherry Hood and there might even be some t-shirts available.  What you wear doesn’t matter, but your presence does.  The parade starts at Roseville Area High School and ends just below c

Brews and Book Reviews - July 24

The League of Women Voters Roseville Area is hosting their third annual Brews and Book Reviews event on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Bent Brewstillery, 1744 Terrace Drive, Roseville (between Lincoln Drive and Fairview Ave.)

Attendees are encouraged to bring a book to recommend to others for summer reading.  Craft beers and non-alcoholic drinks are available for purchase.

Sustainability Field Trip to Macalester College - June 5

The Sustainability Tour at Macalester College Markim Hall (1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul) is scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 5. The building features native landscaping, energy efficiency, water conservation, and solar panels. For these reasons and more it has been certified as LEED Platinum, the highest level of certification for energy efficiency and environmental design by the U.S. Green Building council. Transportation details will be relayed in the May/June Voter newsletter, and will include options to either carpool or take public transportation.

April 2019 Voter

Included in the April 2019 Voter are articles about:

  • Recaps of the excellent programs held in March (Elder Abuse, Civic Literacy 101 and the Becoming American film/discussion
  • An introspective message from Florence Sprague on the polarizing impact of certain words and communications, and the work of the organization Better Angels to provide opportunities to dialog.  In light of this, Florence faces a dilemma in how to discuss equity without using polarizing language.  That discussion will be continued in the next Voter.
  • A call for program ideas for the 2019-20 year.  Send them to Bonnie Koch, Program Committee chair.
  • Descriptions of the many events coming up in April and later.
